Is it safe to use lime in chicken run.I am thinking that it will help to keep the run not to smell so yuckey and strong in the coming summer months.I am using de now. my coop is really close to my house.i will clean out coop every 3 months.will that be enough?

This is a great question. Our coop and run is starting to be a bit "fragrant" also. Can't wait to hear some advice on this

I use sand, about 6 inches deep in the run. The chickens keep it turned over in their scratching. The poop gets recycled in the sand. No smell.

We always put fire place ashes and lime in ours when I was a kid...just basically sprinkled it through. Always had healthy girls. I use food grade DE sprinkled in the coop too, along with a base layer of shavings under hay. I have a small coop so the poop gets cleaned out a few times a week. Basic rule, if it amells it gets cleaned. I am about to pit down lime in my coop now that fall is here to sweeten the soil up a bit.
