Lime

Is it OK to use lime on the floor of a covered coop to absorb smells? I use it in horse stalls but no sure if it's safe for chickens. They would be walking back and forth and scratching and pecking.

My fiance heard it was safe, so he put lime in the bottom of our run. The next day I noticed one of my ducks had its eyes pasted shut from the lime & he couldnt see. It took a while, but after we got enough of the mess off he was able to see again. If you use it, be very very careful that they cant get it into their eyes.

I was always under the impression to use it very sparingly, and keep the chickens out of it for 6-8 hours, then clean the majority of it out. I have a wood base in my raised coop, and I usually let it sit for a few hours, spray it down slightly, scrub it, and then clean it out and give it a 'rinse' with my brush and fresh water. If you have a dirt base or have bedding on top, it should be fine provided it's used sparingly, and not in direct contact with the chickens.

I always put a light dusting on my poop boards after I clean them been doing it for years with a peanut butter bottle (converted into a salt or lime shaker) and mask not good to inhale.

Keeps flies and odours down and dries droppings faster makes cleaning easier.

You have to take into consideration your set up.

They do step on the boards for time to time and maybe even roost on them occasionally but it has never translated into a problem.

I would advise against using it where there might be a parade of birds going through it constantly.

It is caustic.
