Hello,
I am posting this about my barred rock pullet. I am not sure what is going in, so I am going to put out there different information which may not be related, but it might be? I am not sure. She will be 5 months old tomorrow, a few days ago, she started looking for a place to lay, but no egg yet. And for the past week and a half, she has had fecal matter on her bum, so everyday, I wipe her off with a warm towel and return her to the flock. And the main reason I am posting is because she had a slight but noticable limp. It began a day after a hawk swooped down (not for her but for one of my pigeons she was sitting below, the pigeon was able to fly away and is unharmed btw) and she jumped off a chair she was on. This was maybe 5 or 6 days ago, but today her limp is worse, very obvious. After the attempted attack, I examined her over to make sure the hawk hadn't grabbed her, the next day the limp came So I checked her legs out better. I found nothing. And today i checked again and still found no scratches, no bumps. I gently touched every part of her thigh and leg and didn't find anything odd. Does anyone had advice on if the feces and the limp could be related? Might it have something to do with trying to lay? Any help on how to figure out the source of the limp? And relief? Like right now she is sitting at my feet, away from the flock which is odd behavior for her. While waiting for a response, i am going to soak her feet in warm epsom salt water.

Dirty butt & limp I'm thinking two different issues...
Is she eating/drinking ok?
What are you feeding?
When did she lay last?
What color is her poop?
Aside from a dirty bum, is her poop ok?
Have you checked her crop; full at night, empty in the mornings?
Is either of her legs swollen?
Have you checked under the feet for bruising?
Is she tender to touch?

She could possibly be egg bound, since you said she was looking for a nest a few days ago. Instead of just soaking her feet in a warm epsom salt bath, maybe soak her whole lower body too for 20 minutes or so. Make sure you dry her if it is chilly out and also if you have the Tums handy, break one up in about 6 to 8 pieces and give it to her. She won’t eat it by herself, but just open her beak and pop the pieces in one at a time and she will swallow them. They will give her calcium which will increase contractions if she is trying to lay an egg. Have you been giving her oyster shell? Hopefully she will lay an egg shortly after.

Is she eating/drinking ok? She is eating fine, I suppose drinking too, although I am not sure. I am just joining them for the day about an hour ago
What are you feeding? She and all the other hens eat a mix called groovy hen that I pick up at the local feed store, mixed in that is some Purina crumbles. Also, they free range when i am home to watch them, which is all day, 4 days a week and a few hours the other days. So she has access to bugs and grass.
When did she lay last? She has never laid, she is 5 months old and a few days ago, she began looking for a place in the yard and house, so i showed her to the nesting boxes. On a side note, none of my hens have, she is the oldest, everyone else is 4 months old
What color is her poop? I have not seen her poop, the color sticking to her feathers is the white part.
Aside from a dirty bum, is her poop ok?
Have you checked her crop; full at night, empty in the mornings? Her crop has been functioning properly, full at night, empty in the morning
Is either of her legs swollen? Neither leg is swollen
Have you checked under the feet for bruising? I have, no bruises I have noticed
Is she tender to touch?
when I first pick her up to examine her, she is antsy, but she calms down and relaxes after a few seconds.

I also have been looking into vent gleek? I think that was the name. I am not sure if that is the issue, she does have a white-ish, grey gritty material at the base of her feathers near her crop, I have a photo, I will upload it

The replies to the questions by @ChickNanny13 are in the quoted area, after each question and this is the photo of her vent, the gritty stuff is under her vent, at the base.of those little feathers. I am not sure if it is noticeable in the picture, but it is definitely out of the ordinary. I checked everyone's vents yesterday whole giving them a dust bath

Almost looks like she has a yellowish yolk like substance around her vent.

I do not have tums. The crumbles I mix in the with groovy mix has oyster shells in it. But not realizing the importance of it when I bought grit a month or so ago, it was just the little rocks, not the crushed shells. So although they are getting some, maybe not enough? I was going to use up the rocks, then buy the she'll grit. Perhaps I should go ahead and switch?
