Hi everybody, I have been searching through the limping hen threads, and there are alot! Most seem to be focused on chicks though. Anyways, here's my question:
I have a 2 1/2 year old plump beautiful and healthy RIR mix that has been limping on and off for over a year. I mean, she will limp one day and its gone the next. When I notice her limping I pull her out of the coop for a couple days so she doesn't have to jump down off the roost in the AM. Up until this episode, she has been eating, feeling great etc. No heat or swelling anywhere in the leg that I can tell. Now, she has been in a dog crate for 4 days, and its just getting worse. She was getting depressed and not wanting to eat or drink in the crate so I set her up a little isolation area right next to her run so she can see her friends. I just have a small flock of 4 birds, and a 8X8 run with the "purina coop" attatched, and of course this bird is our favorite. She uses her wing to stand up now, hobbles to her food and water and then just plops on the ground the rest of the time. She is def. happier outside but how long do I let her go on like this? How long can legs sometimes take to heal? The leg does not look deformed at all except that she holds it up, or just barely touches it down while walking. She is not laying right now, obviously. I hope I provided enough info to help you guys with some ideas. Oh yeah, she eats purina layena, Oyster shells, BOSS as a daily treat, grass and bugs, and kitchen scraps for her diet.

Did the limping come from an injury that you know of or did she just kind of develop it gradually? Have you inspected her foot for an abscess (bumble foot) or other visible cause that might flare from time to time? Is there anyway to make a ramp up to the roosts to help her get up and down w/out jumping but she could still be with her flock mates? I know you said the leg isn't deformed, but will she let you check the range of motion against the other let to see if you can discover which part has the problem (hip vs. leg vs. foot)? Best of luck to you and your girls!

Thanks! No specific injury that I know of, and I can't find any difference between the legs and feet, I have felt all the way up to the pelvis. It always comes on gradually but this is def. the worst flare up. She has a ramp up to the inside of the coop, and also to the roost/nesting boxes, but poor thing can barley walk she can't even navigate ramps :( I just went out to check her she has been laying in the same spot all day, and I keep picking her up throghout the day to offer her food, and she just splays out her wings and plops down to peck her dish. Poor thing she's my fave bird! And 3 year olds too!
