I have a 5 year old Golden Wyandotte who has been limping. I checked her for bumblefoot and didn’t see anything. I thought maybe she had a sprain or other injury, but now I am wondering if maybe it is scaly leg mites. I’m posting a picture of the foot she has been favoring.

If it is scaly leg mites, I’m curious if anyone has had success with Premo Poultry Spray against those. I already have a bottle and like that it is natural, but obviously I need something that works too.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, she's got SLM (scaly leg mites). I have never heard of that product and maybe it'd work for other mites, but doubt it would for these.

Do you have other chickens? I ask because you'll have to treat them too, and depending on how many there are two ways to treat them.

If it's just her, and just a few chickens, I'd go in the coop at night when she/they are roosting and slather their feet and legs with Vaseline. You can mix things into the vaseline like a little Vicks or some A&D or Desitin diaper rash ointment if you want. It's fine just plain too.

Do that every other night for three nights. Then repeat the whole thing a week later. It'll take several weeks/months to completely heal, but you'll start seeing improvement soon.

Still could have a sprain or something, keep an eye on her. Do you have a ramp or ladder to get on/ off the roost? Some bedding by the roost so she doesn’t have a hard ‘landing’ if she jumps off the roost?

Can you take some photos of the bottoms of her feet?

I'd slather on some ointment or oil to the legs/feet, it looks like she may have the start of SLM.

Thank you! I have some A&D in my Walmart pickup for tomorrow so will start treatment tomorrow evening. I have 9 and will go ahead and treat them all.

Just to be sure, what I said above maybe wasn't so clear. I meant you could mix something else like that in if you wish, meaning into the vaseline. The vaseline is what does the work by smothering them. A little of the diaper rash stuff or Vicks or similar is more of a soother. Not required, just I know some do that, and I did too with A&D.

Good to know! Thanks! I got Vaseline as well.

The American Poultry Association recommends Vicks salve for leg mites. Sulfur also kills leg mites. The thick ointment can smother them with repeated treatment 2-3 days a week for several weeks. You can buy sulfur powder in bulk online and mix it with vaseline or petroleum jelly, buy Nustock Cream from a feed store, or buy sulfur ointment such as this one sold online by Walmart:
