We have 14 pullets, 5 1/2 months old, not laying yet, free-range most of the day, free access to layer feed, oyster shells, grit and fresh water. My brown leghorn started limping today. She was camped out in a laying box (I thought she was getting ready to lay...) but when I went to snoop, she rushed out, hopping around. There is a lump at the tip of her spur (is that what you call the back toe?) right near the toenail. Not hot to the touch, not hard, pretty squishy, and she didn't flinch when I was touching and squeezing it. But then why would she limp?

Looking at these, it looks like the nail is missing... I can do a search for that. I was searching for "toe lump" and kept coming up with bumblefoot and it didn't seem like that to me.

Does it look like just irritation from a missing nail?

it kinda looks like her toenail could have gotten ripped out... but there's no blood.. has she always had a missing toenail there? maybe it's an ingrown toenail
