I have a Jersey Giant roo that has been limping slightly for several days. I noticed he was doing a lot of sitting on his knees and pecking at the ground.
The first day I had a chance, I took him to see the vet, which specializes in chickens(thank goodness). Lurch was good as gold at the vet's office. He stayed still, didn't try to run or scratch anybody, and everyone thought he was a very handsome boy, but when the vet walked in and saw the way he was sitting, he immediatley said, "oh, no."
He asked if I had switched feed recently, and of course I had. I got tired of all the birds wasting their crumbles, and so I started getting pellets. This was a different brand from what I normally get because my husband got them while I was sick in bed.
The vet said that it was a slipped tendon and that it is from a vitamin B deficiency. He said the roos will show signs and symptoms first because their metabolism is faster than the hens.
He recommended I switch back to my original feed and supplement him with B-complex.
I know he is still hurting because I had to pick him up and place him inside the hen house tonight. I'm sure it will take a little time for him to come around, but i'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this or knkows anything else about it?
