My rooster has been limping on and off for a couple months. It got better a month ago and he seemed fine but recently it’s gotten worse. There has been no trauma that I have seen. I don’t see any obvious lesions except for this spot on the back of his leg (hock?). He won’t quite put his foot all the way down when he walks.
He is pretty stand offish so I haven’t seen him eat much, but he will sometimes eat when I throw treats, etc.
See attached pic…could this be scaly leg mites?
All the other hens are fine.
🤔

This one is worse. The other one has some of that red in the back too tho. This is the leg that he is having trouble walking on. I’ll try to get another pic of his other leg and his toes.

A video of him walking may be helpful. For video, upload to youtube and provide a link.

Does he lay down a lot?
I do see a few scabs on the joint in the photo. He may have some infection in the joint.
If he doesn't improve, then you can try an oral antibiotic to see if that helps.

How does his other leg look when you compare to this one?
Here are some pics of the other leg, the 2 legs together, the bottom of the foot, the front of the feet and how he won’t put his foot all the way down. He’s an Easter Egger, 11 months. Thanks for any thoughts.

I'd lean toward injury at this point.

The red and irritation to the joints is likely due to him resting/laying down a lot since he's reluctant to move.

I'd lightly swab those scabs on the joints with Chlorhexidine. Let that dry.
For the leg he's favoring, I'd wrap it to give support. Coban/vet wrap/sports wrap, whatever you want to call it works well. Do check the leg daily and you'll probably need to rewrap as well. (This is why I buy wrap in bulk off amazon, compare prices and sizes, sometimes wide is best, you can always cut it narrower).

The other leg, I'd be inclined to also wrap, so the joint is protected, it wouldn't have to be a lot, just enough to stay on and give him a bit of cushion.

For me, I let injured wrapped birds move about with their flock as they see fit, but if you feel he needs to be penned then that's good too.

Thanks so much. Ok will give it a try. I can keep him in the pen vs the larger run during the day so he has less room to roam.

I’m picking up 5 new hens on Tuesday so I want to get him on the road to recovery!
