I dont think you can, but when faced with this task and when working with leghorn lines, I use the size and color of the comb to sex them, with a 90 percent acuracy, leghorn cross boys will have huge red combs on their first week

at one time I was using a white leghorn line with a fibromelanotic line to produce sex links at hatch, the problem was that the fibromelanotic line was not productive enough... but you could sex the chicks at hatch

Are you getting your breeding stock from a hatchery or a breeder.

If your stock is coming from a hatchery then I would say no you will not be able to feather sex them.
Also keep in mind that a Hatchery "Rhode Island White" is very different than a Breeder/ Show quality Rhode Island White so there genetics are going to be different.

I'm getting the breeding stock from a breeder indeed. Thanks a lot for the tips

If your getting them from a breeder then,

White Leghorn Rooster over a R.I. White Hen the offspring should be all Rose Comb and the offspring will also be able to be feather sexed. [pullets faster feathering than cockerels]
Remember the true R.I. Whites are a Rose Comb breed, if the birds that the breeder is selling have Single Combs then there not real R.I. Whites.

On the R.I. Red Rooster over a R.I. White Hen, I believe the true R.I. Whites are Recessive White and if so then all first Generation offspring will be Black

Dear Chris ,

You are absolutely right ! and of course that is not what I was trying to do .I wanted to have a red sex link by crossing a RIR and a white cross (taking advantage of the laying capacity of the leghorn ) .I had to double check with the chicken calculator online and they F1 were all black .

I know you probably know the answer :) any help ?

Regards and thanks

that is only true if the R.I whites are based on Extended Black(E/E) or Birchen (ER/ER) if they are base on eb or wildtype the could comeout looking like wheaten(eWh) birds or eb chicks..

RIR x White leghorn will give you all white F1 birds, chicks could look all yellow with some black spots and when adults they will be all white with some black or color leaking thrue the white

Thank you for your answers.

Now if I understand well the genetic make up of a standard RIR is : eWh/eWh, s+/s+, Mh/Mh, Db/Db, and possible sundry melanisers.
Do you the ones for white leghorn and RIW ? Thanks
