Hi guys

one of my ducks had a really huge prolapse this morning, the size of a small orange.

I raced her to my vet and thankfully she was able to reinsert the prolapsed tissue and repair a large tear in the bowel and my duck is recovering.

however it is now the weekend and as the X-ray showed a number of developing ovums in the duck, thee is a pretty high chance she will be attempting to lay and will prolapse again. My bird vet is not available for the next 36 or so hours and there are no other vets in my area who would be confident in dealing with this sort of thing, so if she prolapses in the meantime Im the vet, lol
My vet has given me dextrose to reduce swelling, a prescription for a local anaesthetic gel, plus surgical lubricant. I also have pain relief and antibiotics etc.

My duck also has a couple of stitches to hold everything in and I may have to cut one if she has trouble pooping and if she has to lay an egg the other will have to be snipped as well.
i have dealt with smaller prolapses myself but not this size

so I was wondering if anyone has any useful links with video or good close up pics showing technique and useful hints on how the heck to get a LARGE amount of prolapsed tissue back in, that I might be able to watch now, so that I have some idea of what to do to try and get it back in.

again I reiterate this is not the sort of prolapse that you can just gently push it back in, we are talking about a LARGE amount of tissue, so much that when she stood up it was still hitting the ground. To be honest I fully expected my vet to tell me that she would not be able to be saved, and I am feeling very happy and grateful that she has made it this far. She is literally one of the first two ducklings I ever hatched and is pretty special to me so I want to do all I can to keep her around a little longer

if you have any good links could you please post them for me? Thank you.
prayers for my girl are also much appreciated

on an aside does anyone have any experience with the suprelorin implant in ducks? (Anyone outside the us as apparently it’s banned there in poultry, not because it is bad for the birds but because the fda make decisions based on poultry being considered food livestock and not loved pets (I’m just repeating what a sanctuary is saying about that - I am in NZ so it’s legal for a vet to prescribe and use them here)

That is quite a stressful situation you are dealing with, I am sorry.

I'll tag one of our duck experts for you @Isaac 0 , hopefully he will be able to help.

I wish I could help but thankfully I have never had to deal with a prolapse. Did your vet tell you to keep her in a dark quiet place with food and water? This is to keep her from making more eggs. Of course, if she has an egg already in the process of moving not much you can do about that one. Getting a prolapse that large back in by yourself might be a problem. I am just not sure what to tell you let's see if we can get @casportpony to have a look and maybe give advice.
@Pyxis
I did look online for info and pictures but didn't find anything useful

I only know a bit about chickens, but it helps to try and stop them from laying temporarily. That can take 3 days, but the bird has to be kept in a dark room or cage for 16 hours each day, allowing only 8 hours to walk around, eat and drink. Not an easy task, but once she stops laying, it can take a couple of weeks for her to start laying again. I’m sure that you are nervous about this. Hopefully, it doesn’t get too hard to deal with.

Unfortunately the only bird I've ever had prolapse was a chicken hen, and she did not survive.

I third the advice to keep her in a dark room to try to stop her from laying that way if possible.
