My broilers were attacked by gnats today. When I went into their coop they were all covered w/ gnats or some biting fly. They had them crawling all over them so bad they looked like they were infested with fleas. (was not fleas tho) They were picking at them so bad that some had holes in their skin and one had a 1 1/2 inch rip in skin with muscle exposed. They are on straw/hay that was covered with these bugs (hay didn't have bugs before) I threw down a bale of pine bedding which seemed to help. Sun was going down so that might of been why bugs went away. 2hours later I was sitting with chickens and noticed one of them open their mouth and liquid RUN out of the mouth then the nose. A few minutes later it did it again. It then went over to feeder and ate. Any ideas as to what is going on? And how do I keep the gnats from bothering my chickens? Also I lost 2 broilers in last 3 days that acted like they were gasping for air. Any input would be much appreciated.
