List of egglaying factors

I am geting silkies and I havnt had the experience with egg laying yet but my friends had what they say are normal chickens but I think they mean Isa browns but yeah so they put a golf ball in a bush were the chickens had make a nest. They spent a long time making a coop from scratch and well now the chickens only nest in the bushes but apparently they are great layers. They don't know what to do with the eggs. So some thing like an egg could get them to do it.

or you could pit vinegar in the water that can help;)
My silkies are good layers. They lay at least 4 eggs a week each. Hopefully you will get some good laying ones as well.

I'm going through the same thing with my girls. from 6 eggs down to 2 at best, most of the time1 and some days none. 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 year old RSL. *sigh*..... guess they are starting to molt, get a little up there in age, and are being stubborn.

We all know what this means though, Time to tell our spouces that they are getting 'old' and we need new babies to add to our flock!!!!!
(he'll never know as we snicker and run to the hatchery)

Just to tell you, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 year old birds are not old. I have a black australorp hen and a barred rock hen that are still laying at the age of 6. You may be interested in getting a heritage breed of chicken that will lay for much longer than a red sex link. Red sex links burn out quick and are not for everybody.

yea, that's what I have heard. I know they are not old by no means. I have a RSL that is at least 5 or 6. Not really sure, she was an adoptee from the SPCA. She does not lay anymore, but is a vibrant nutcase none the less. I do love how friendly and affectionate my RSL are though. I have 2 White Cochins and an EE as well. None of these 3 are laying either.

Now that my girls are no longer Broody and raising their young they are laying again yay..... but i just started with treats and "toys" recently but ive noticed happier chickens lay more eggs... before the babies id get an egg a day now ime getting two eggs a day with a break on sundays lol

Saw this thread this morning and thought I would comment. during molt, stress, etc hens will not lay as well. When in molt, I mix my magic mix: spinach leaves, yogurt all natural, mealey worms and fish packed in water for them every two or three days for a wk. They will put on the nicest feathers ever and are not as irritable during their molt either. I have had hens for 4 yrs.
In the winter the christmas lights are great for getting them to go in on the late evenings. They are not too bright and you can use the color you like , red or blue. Either is said to prevent pecking and irritability of chicks.
I also use the natural ACV. In the winter I use the cookie pan heaters to keep the water from freezing. The ACV prevents bacteria growth too.
During the fall i routinely worm my hens. Its also a good time to use the ivomec by dropping on them to prevent lice, mites etc. from driving them crazy during the winter .Loved reading these comments . Gloria jean
