list of emergency supplies

is there a list of emergency supplies a chicken owner should have on hand for the chickies? like a emergency kit?

I would even like to know if there is a list of this that should be on hand for everyday use for them... things like: food water are obvious but things like grit and oyster shell... and are there any medications I should have jsut in case....

I also heard some one mention to give the birds lots of toys.. do you guys have any suggestions on toys to provide? could you share photos of your toys?

We keep a septic pencil for stopping bleeding.
Blue kote for covering wounds.
Antibiotics for seriously wounded birds.
we also keep stuff for treating coxci cause you cannot get it up here, maybe out in the valley you can find it but you'll have to ask Tori what the name is.

You don't have to have grit or oyster shell on hand at all times. instead of grit you can use bags of play sand from lowes/homedepot. oyster shell is just for the calcium needs of laying hens. the more eggs your girls lay you'll start to notice a difference in the shell thickness. when it starts getting thin they need extra calcium. We keep a tin pie plate sitting on the heater that we throw all our shells into. the egg cooks and the shell gets brittle then you can crush it up and put it out in a bowl or on the ground like scratch.

Occasionally we'll hang up a head of cabbage in the run the girls have fun jumping up and pecking at it.

Not really an emergency supply but more of a preventative. Vaseline. If a chicken has a big comb you can put it on when real cold temps are coming to prevent frostbite.

I have been keeping the egg shells that was one thing I rememebred from having chickens as a kid........ I use the heat from baking. when I am done baking something I toss the eggs inside the oven.... I have heard people say they give cabbage as a treat!!!

Yep you spelled it right.

blue kote is an antiseptic spray, and it covers up wounds and disguises the blood to prevent picking. Chickens will peck at anything red (so don't paint your toe nails red then wear sandals to the coop), so if one gets a small wound or sore everyone will peck at it until there is blood all over the coop and the chicken is dead. It usually comes in a spray can and stains everything it comes into contact with blue. Fingernail polish remover will take it off of human hands.

Tori keeps Tylan50 injectible with tiny syringe needles on hand as a good antibiotic. Sulmet and Amprolium liquid for cocci, Ivermectin for lice, and Wazine for worms. Most of this stuff can be found at First State Veterinary Supply if you can't find it near you.
