Listen to the mockingbird

We had a one-eyed mockingbird hen nest in our yard. She was the best mom to her chicks, but she was so protective she would attack my dogs when they went into the yard to pee. It was the longest summer for them, with every trip outside a mission into enemy territory and constant dive-bombing! Poor dogs were afraid to go out at all after a while. I was glad when her chicks grew up and the nest was abandoned, and the dogs were very relieved too.

I really like mockingbirds. Around here the males have modified their behavior because of the increae in the Cooper's hawk population. They are nowhere near as vocal as they once were. Also they have stopped singing on moon lit nights. I'm guessing that might be because of owl predation? Anyone have the answer to that behavioral change?

My hubby gets irritated by ours that sings at 2:30 AM, but (and forgive me, here's the English teacher nerd coming out here) I always tell him, leave it alone, after all, "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird." He just rolls his eyes at me.
