The plastic liner is there because I don't like the urine build up in the bare box, but yes if you have plastic eating bunnies you can do without. I had a lot of rescues at one time in pens on the ground and lots of time out on grass so I quess they kept busy with lots of activities and didn't focus on the plastic which btw, I folded under the pans so they couldn't get teased by the edges
