Litter in my waterer

The commercial biz uses wire, too. So you are certainly on to something. Once my chicks get big enough to outgrow their natal brooder, they never see another wood chip. That is at about 4 weeks.

Their grow out cage is wire bottomed too. Nice looking set up... inspiring, really. I wonder, since they have a choice: do they sleep in the shavings tray or just plop down any old place?

Because I have a feather footed heavy breed, I was told long ago not to raise them on wire. I have also kept their roosts low to avoid leg injuries jumping up and down.

theres not much you can do about that. maybe if you put newspapers or paper towels down, it might help, but idk.
good luck with your chicks :]

I raise mine on two bricks, then put a flat piece of wood on top. The wood is larger than the bottom of the waterer and the chicks can stand on it to get at the water. As they grow I add 4x4's or more bricks but the board remains so they can reach the water easily. Really helps to keep the shavings out of the water. I use it in the coop this was as well.

I only use newspaper and then paper towels over it in the brooder for the first couple weeks. After that I add shavings and I put the waterer in a clay pot bottom. As the chicks get bigger, I flip the clay pot bottom upside down to raise it up further off the floor.
