Hi, we just got two 5 week old kittens today. The people we got them from did not litter train them already. I was wondering how I should litter train them? And I was reading I couldn’t ya clumping litter (which is all I have) and so I was wondering if I could use rabbit litter or just paper? Or if there was something around the house I could substitute for litter? Thanks! BA800413-5DE4-4DD8-9DF7-6EE275021AB8.jpeg

In my experience, if you provide kittens with litter they will use it! It can be helpful to place them inside the box when you first add the litter box so that they feel it on their feet. They bury their waste instinctually and should catch on quickly. It can help to keep them in a small room or bathroom at first so that they can make it to the box in time and cleanup is easy. All the kittens I've ever had learn to use the box quickly but sometimes the art of burying it without making a mess takes a little longer.

I've never heard not to use clumping litter with kittens, perhaps just in case they ingest it? I use pine pellets with my cats and have done the same for kittens. I don't know that I would use paper, you could try sand if you are looking for something cheap and natural.

I second what swamphiker recommends. When I've noticed a kitten starting to get in that "gotta go" mode I grab them and plop in the litter pan. They're quick learners. I've also never heard of clumping litter being an issue for kittens. I've used different types over the years with and without kittens and never had a health issue with any of them. I prefer clumping litter
