My BR just laid her first egg, kind of. It was only a half shell, almost rubbery, but there evidently was a yolk inside because it was in the nesting material. I brought the shell in to examine it. At first I thought it collapsed, but on closer inspection, the edge of the shell was rolled over. She seemed to be fine because after she laid the egg, she was back out there with the other girls walking around.

From what I can figure, they are only between 17 to 20 weeks old. They have been on layena since we got them (we were told they were older than they actually were) and I keep oyster shell grit in their yard. They get wormed once a month and a little vitamin once a month. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks for any advice.

My BR first few eggs were soft shelled. By the 4th or 5th day she was laying regular eggs. She's fine now and has even given me a couple double yolkers.

From what I've read, it's normal for you to get these kinds of eggs when they start laying.

Curious though, you said it had half a shell. Does it look broken?

I thought someone got to it before me and tried to eat it. But when I looked at it, the edge was perfectly even. I would suspect if someone had gotten to it, the egg edge would be a little ragged looking. It would be like if you cut a stocking, how the cut edge rolls up a bit. Guess she forgot to make the top.

First eggs are funny. I have had little eensy weensy ones. Great5 big huuuuuuuuge ones.

Ones without any shell, just encapsulated in the membrane-those are wild.

I have had colored eggs that look like only the top half was "spray painted" the other half without pigment.

Some without any yolks and some that were only yolks.

It takes time for all of those reproductive mechanisms to get sync'd up I guess!

I have had 2 eggs like this from my young girls. I assume it is the same hen. It is a brown egg with white splatters everywhere. Very striking egg to look at.

Mine I thought were quite large for first eggs, but then I compared them to my mums free rangers and hers are HUGE compared to mine... I would say my first eggs were about the size of a shop bought Large size here in australia though. lol
