little bugs in scratch.

Well, we used to get weevils in our pasta. Then someone told me to put several sticks of spearmint or doublemint gum in with the pasta. It worked, no more bugs. Just make sure you remove it before you cook it.

Try it with your scratch feed.

I would vote for a metal trash can too. Then you can store the feed in the barn, garage, coop...

The bugs are a bonus snack for the chickens. But, I do agree, keep all your food in a garbage can with a solid lid. If the lid isn't solid, stretch a bungy chord over it.

As far as bugs themselves, they post no harm. And actually, if anyone is strong stomached, I just read this great article on how to harvest roadkill for the maggots. It's free protein for your birds.

Weevils can totally destroy your feed. The best option is to not buy in much bulk unless you have airtight storage containers. I try to buy only as much as I can use in a couple weeks time. Anything with corn or grain in it, they will get in and eat all the good out of it. I had a sack of corn in my barn for about a month earlier this summer and it was half powder before I discovered them. They are not just "extra protein". They are a huge nuisance.
