Mildly jealous. What a beautiful place to live!
It is pretty where I live though, and your ecosystem sure sounds like mine, though I think I might be able to add an occasional gator to the mix (but not on my land, thank God) I am planning my better set up after losing my ducks when the water went way down this summer. Best of luck to you. I will be following the progress!
There are bear up in the Smoky Mountain Park but never seen them around here. Actually the most annoying critters around here are squirrels with wild turkeys a close second. But we did manage to construct a squirrel guard on the bird feeder that has lasted since last spring and has thwarted each and every little seed-stealing (and wasting plot) all summer.
Got the post holes dug and the post set. Eight holes with all those trees and didn't hit a single root!
Next step will be raise and level the outer frame, level it put in the floor joists and trim off the posts. Then gonna have to get some lumber in for the floor and to frame it,to I think I'll raise it about a foot off the ground at the lowest point. I was thinking I would include the space under the coop as run space but I don't want it sitting too high and I don't want impromptu nests that I have to crawl back to reach. But I do want it off the ground to keep it dryer.
I'm planning to put linoleum in both sections. I'm thinking that if I put it down right after the floor and then put up the framing that would hepl to seal it AND it would be a lot easier thatn cutting and fitting it to each rooms after the walls are up. Thoughts about that?
I also didn't want the problem of nesting under there as one of mine is also only about a foot off the ground so I decided to close the bottom off. I agree on the flooring, would be much easier. Lookin' good!
This week's progress. Need to get some lumber before I can do anything else. I decided to leave it high enough so that I had the option of giving the chicken access to the space (after all, it is 64 sq feet) underneath from the run. Still not sure I want to be crawling under there for eggs but I've lots of time to decide that.
Bilfields, we laid vinyl flooring, THEN put the walls up; The flooring was bigger than the lfoor, so it goes up inside the walls about 4-6 inches all 'round. We also raised ours off the ground, but it is 2 feet up...plenty of room for the girls and if we need to get under there, we can, too! Good luck on your project...it looks great!
