Do different breeds of chickens look different while candling? Do they hatch at different times or paces? I was told I have 3 different breeds.... Red star.. black Australorp. and Ameraucanas. Looking at my eggs I couldn't tell you what is what but then again I haven't really done any research. Any fun info on any of these breeds?

Red stars have the typical light brown eggs, Black Austraorp also lays light brown and TRUE Ameraucanas lay a bluish egg. I would be very surprised however if your eggs were true Ameraucana and not ee (Easter Eggers.) If they are greenish they are EE. EE's are popular and are crosses between the blue egg layers and brown egg layers (Aracauna and Ameraucanas) crossed with a brown egg layer giving you a green or olive egger.

I like to monitor the ones in the hot spot, and when comfortable with that temp, then I do the cold spots. Truth be known, I have 2 digital, 2 digital medical, 1 mercury bulb, and 1 indoor/outdoor large bulb. So, I'm monitoring all over the place. With only one thermometer, it's easy to forget where the probe is, and then rush to make an adjustment before taking the time to assess if that adjustment is really necessary. For example, I've been tempted with a knee jerk reaction when the probe has fallen off an egg, and landed on the floor of the bator, which is much cooler, even with a fan in there.

I have one thermometer that I trust, and a couple others that I know are a bit off. Then I bought a Brinsea Spot Check. I was so disappointed when I put it in for this hatch. I cut a cup from an egg carton, bread-tied it into the turner, and sat the Spot Check on it. Perfect egg height. But it kept reading low compared to my trusted thermometer. Well, when I locked down on Monday and took the turner out, I took the little egg carton cup, turned it over and used masking tape to tape the Spot Check onto the cup. Now its reading perfect! Before, it was just resting in slits I cut in the cup. Now with the tape at the base of the probe (about where it meets the wire), it seems to be registering correctly. I was so relieved.

None of the three you named...lol Leghorns are the most popular in these parts, andalusians, Hamburgs, spitzhaubens, sultan, polish, houdan, are just a few of the breeds that are listed as white egg layers, at least some of the ones that I am more familar with.

I set 4 eggs in lockdown on 4/15 and I am proud to say that 4/4 have hatched.
