Hi, Yes I have bought vintage threads and they do break easy - there is a product available to help strengthen vintage thread called Thread Magic - it is a thread conditioner that some tatters use. That is so cool. I am trying to learn how to do that. I am using my great grandma’s and great great grandma’s old books to learn. That’s how I to crochet and am learning how to knit. My grandma taught me embroidery. Do u have any tips on how to start and the what kind of thread to use(the thread it says to use is no longer available to buy, and all of it that my grandma has is dry rotted)
Someone taught me to needle tat a few years ago, and then more recently I learned to shuttle tat, mainly learned from You Tube videos (there are many). Georgia Seitz Beginner Tatting Series are good videos on You Tube - they have videos for Needle Tatting and Shuttle Tatting beginners. Totus Mel and Rusti Kate also have some beginner needle tatting videos on there.
Best thread for beginners when learning is just any size 10 crochet thread that you can purchase from Walmart or craft stores - preferably in a lighter color so you can see your stitches clearer. If needle tatting, a size 5 tatting needle is good with size 10 thread. Now I have been doing it for a while, my favorite size thread is size 20, though many tatters like smaller thread for certain projects. Lizbeth is a nice brand of thread that tatters use - with various sizes and colors - but not worth using while you are learning.
There are many helpful tatting groups to join on FB if you are on there.
Good Luck! It takes a little time and patience.
