brrrrrrrrrr....this windy and cloudy weather was not to little Jon's liking, but no amount of crowing seemed to coax the sun out today. After a good few attempts, he went back to his manly duties. Trudie is molting ver graciously and her new tail feathers are coming in. Little Jon thought they were very pretty and spent the whole morning flirting with her. Hester's molting was not as gracious. She has bald patches with new feather pens and looks a bit like a 'biker chick' with spikes. And with her feathers going in every possible direction these days, her bottom was less 'polite'. TT doesn't seem to be molting.
The hoomin was out late again this morning! She opened the run as usual and all the gangster girls were out first, as usual. Trudie lingered for a moment and little Jon got ready to do his panic. The hoomin told him he was a "silly chicken" and little Jon didn't take too kindly to her remarks. Then to the hoomin's surprise, little Jon hopped out of the run ALL BY HIMSELF. The hoomin was so proud of him and wondered why she hadn't called him a 'silly chicken' earlier.
Little Jon began to enjoy his time free ranging. He hasn't been spotted having a dust bath yet, but some serious scratching around under the dead leaves has been seen. Even from the kitchen, the hoomin can hear him calling the girls to some taste treat he has found. TT stood still under the palm tree today and the hoomin noticed something different about her....TT has grown up into a beautiful young lady. She is not the gawky chick or the awkward teenager any more. She is a beautiful pullet now. the hoomin wonders when little Jon will ever notice. Maybe if he freaked out a bit less about EVERYTHING, he would have time to notice TT.
Speaking of little Jon's freak out's, another one had begun...
RUN, RUN, RUN for your lives! It's going to eat us all alive I tell you. Every chicken for himself little Jon started yelling. The hoomin and the gangster girls all popped their heads up to see what the fuss was all about. Little Jon was walking extremely quickly (an englishman never runs) back to the coop, stopping every few steps to check if the girls were coming. He was in a flutter! But neither the hoomin or the gangster girls could figure out what it was that little Jon was so convinced was going to eat us all alive.
The gangster girls were rather going to be safe than sorry, little Jon did sound VERY serious, and slowly walked towards the hoomin. She had big feet you know, and she would surely stomp on anything that tried to eat them. The hoomin took a closer look and found the intruder! It was bunny! Silly Chicken said the hoomin. That's not a silly chicken hoomin, that's a gray chicken eating monster! thought little Jon.
Once the gangster girls realized there was no real danger they went back to their daily business. Little bunny is a miniature bunny who has been on the property for over a year. Little Jon had never come face to face with bunny before, and with the bad weather she has been hiding under the house for a few days.
Hester walked up to bunny and gave her a friendly elloooo. HESTER! Don't talk to that guy, he's creepy said little Jon from a safe distance....
Silly chicken thought Hester...
