Little Red Hen is officially a first time Momma!

Well today when I was doing chicken chores I head peeping from under our broody R.I.R. mix unofficially named Little Red Hen.

Her 6 eggs weren't due to hatch until Monday or Tuesday, I'm so excited now that some have hatched! I checked them tonight after it got dark and she has one fluffy light yellow/white chick and 1 chick which is dry but not yet fluffy. She also has 1 pipping egg that I could see.

I will get pictures as soon as I can. I really hope she stays on the nest while they all hatch. She is a first timer and only 7 1/2 months old.

I'm so excited

I love chicks.

(BTW, this does belong here right? Or would it go under incubating and hatching eggs?)

UPDATE: Little Red Hen has 4 chicks as of tonight. Mom and I check and saw another egg pipping as well.

So far out of 6 eggs there are: 4 chicks, 1 pipping, 1 unsure.

She should have at least 5 chicks by morning, and I really hope the 1 unsure egg hatches early tomorrow. I don't want her older chicks to break her of broodiness before all the eggs hatch. (Especially if I get stuck with only 1 egg which would possibly hatch. If I'm going to have chicks/keats inside or in separate cages I like to have at least 2 chicks/keats.

Update: Little Red Hen is done hatching chicks. She ended up with 5 and her sixth egg pipped so we put it in the incubator. It hasn't done anything more yet but I hope it will hatch.

Little Red Hen is doing great though, and so are all her chicks.

I've been meaning to take some, just haven't made it out to the coop with the camera yet.

Little Red Hen's sixth egg which we put in the incubator hatched this afternoon. He's doing great. We'll be bringing in one of the chicks which are currently with Little Red Hen so that this inside guy will have a buddy.

Hopefully my next update I'll have pictures.
