that might not be good, even a small crack might affect the chicks inside, because the dirt and dust in the air could get in there and affect the progress of the egg. I'm no expert, but this is what might happen.

I'm not an expert. But from learning I think this may be what is affecting them. I'm not saying this will happen, but even the slightest disturbance in developing progress could affect them.
