Well, this morning I took my daughter in to the dentist. We "warmed" up the Explorer for 45 minutes, (hoping it would be semi-warm when we got in it-not!!!) and headed into town, bumpity bump, bump with what we call "Fred Flinstones" tires (tires that freeze to the driveway slightly flattened and retain that shape for quite awhile while you go down the road) By the light of the moon and lots of ice fog at 9:15 a.m. we managed to pass all the vehicles that were broke down on the road from the cold, managing somehow to stay off the side of the road ourselves, thankfully.
Hubby said not to come home without a dehumidifier!!! And since I still wasn't able to get a hold of the person selling hers, I drove to Lowe's, and wouldn't even have been able to locate the building if I hadn't known excactly where it was! There was so much ice fog, I couldn't see the building until I drove up right next to it in the parking lot!
I bought the dehumidifier, and it is being installed in the coop as we speak. Will give an update on how it works later.
Actually, Pat, this coop was built without rafters, just a heavily insulated ceiling/roof. I understand where you're coming from though, even though I'm not too sure how much heat would be able to come through the ice fog-it sure was beautiful on the way home, at 12:30 p.m. though!! A huge sun barely over the horizon surrounded by ice fog-kind of ethereal or however you spell it. Almost like something from another planet!
I'm thinking the hair dryer idea might work in another area other than here. I'll never forget when my sister lived in a small house that my parents owned on the same property as the family house (she was trying to be very independent at the time, so my parents remodeled it for her to live in, complete with her own kitchen and all,) Well, one day we didn't see her nearly all day, (nothing new to us!) so I was sent to go knock on her door. (right next door to us) She had been trying to open that door for eight hours or more, and had been using her hair dryer to thaw the build up of ice that had accumulated overnight-and couldn't get out for nothing-she was getting pretty desperate, and was never so glad to see me in all her life!!
The "spoiled rotten" little sister saved her life! What a hoot!!!
Well, the only thing we could do to get her out of there was to kick the door in. Needless to say, in the winter someone went out quite frequently to make sure she was o.k. after that. (so much for her independence!!)
Even our storm doors to the house are completely iced over, and the inside doors don't want to shut all the way sometimes!! That can really let the cold air in!!
Another thing I'd be worried about would be putting that hot air on a frigidly cold window, that it would snap and break at these temperatures. I'd hate to spend another $250.00 on another special order window right now!
I suppose you're probably asking why we live here-(cause the house is paid for, we have no debts, and we like it here some of the time?????
I don't know, I think we're stuck here in this economy!!! I don't think we'd be able to find another house and not have a mortgage bill!!) I guess we'll stick it out for awhile longer, and do whatever we need to do to keep our chickens happy and safe!
