Live in a Very Cold Winter area? Post link to your personal page here!

-37F here last night with a -54F wind chill.

I have 3 heat lamps going in my coop. It stays between 35 and 45F. The chickens must have it better than i do in my house because my well pipe froze!

(fixed it though without any issues, thank goodness).

I put extra shavings in for them to give more insulation on the floor, and they have pink foam board insulation in the walls covered with concrete board. Their coop is made for cold weather! I have a roo with frostbite, but they were out when the snow melted a few weeks ago. They do not want to be outside in the snow at all, but will go out no matter the temperature if there is no snow. We have 2 feet of snow right now, and had 3 feet of snow before a big thaw. They were thrilled to be out for a week, but are now stuck again in their house.

I was always worried they would freeze, but after this weather, I know I can handle about anything between caring for the chickens and the horses.

Best of luck to everyone!

My eyebrows felt like they were frosting over when I went out this morning, like one big unibrow!

Last night, I think, -30F. That's the coldest I've seen in Vermont.
With my 100W heater, my coop thermometer read +8F. The gals are all fine.

I am so bummed! I just found out last night that my awesome max-min thermometer... maxes out at -22F.

I had to go by the airport temps reported by NWS, and "adjust" for my house.

Mrs. AK BB - please send that warm air our way!!

Listening to how bad you guys have it in the Midwest, I completely understand that I should probably count my blessings that's a balmy -10°F here this morning (with a windchill of "I-don't-want-to-know"), but it's cold and I hate it!

My wife braved the Arctic tundra this morning to change out the water (the heater base for the waterer just can't cut it in temperatures like this). The chickens seemed fine, but when she let them outside for a couple of minutes, they started shivering. It's an inside day for chickens and humans alike

Ha, I should edit the title of this thread to "Live in a very cold winter area? Whine about it here" LOL

We were -29.5 C (low negative teens F I think) at midnight, and I was sure we were in for it... but then clouds rolled in and it was up to a balmy -16 C (low *positive* single digits F) by sunrise! Of course now there is a damp breeze and it feels kind of nasty out there, but still, much easier on the ol' furnace. I am devoutly hoping we've had our last -30ish weather for the year. Anyone suspects otherwise, please keep it to yourself <g>

Nope... sorry. Keeping it!

We had a very cool summer this year... wet and rainy, and only above 70F three times all summer. After two weeks of -30F-ish, I think I deserve a little break.

BTW... hear Vermont is beautiful... any pics you can share of springtime to get us thinking warmer weather?

So, Pat, there's hope- send that milder weather east, please. We are whining, and there will be more! Tori- you DO deserve a break.

-21C here this morning, same now, wind chill -41C, coop was a balmy -4C. Hens are eating voraciously and not asking to go out. I think the horse explained what was going on. Widespread power outages, we have ours so far. People are angry (we have a lousy power corp at the mangement level). At least 48 hours to go followed by a storm Monday.
Whine, whine, whine.
