Like me, my brother in southern Indiana has kept chickens for a good while. His chickens are kept in three physical locations with those below on an 80 acre piece that is used mostly for vegetable production, hay, and hunting / fishing. Where the birds are, the closest home, not his, is over 1/8 mile away. This is out on a county road with very little traffic. I far as I can tell he has lost very few chickens, other than oh say 20 last summer to a bunch of raccoons. He killed a lot of raccoons.

The birds number about 60 and free-range what looks like about 30 acres. Much more area than mine get. He has two aluminum carports that have been customized.

Kind of cool, but I would not be able to do similar here. I cringed as he directed me by phone from Montana to let the birds out for the day.

County road with my kids running to their cousins house by themselves. I am what is called a helicopter parent (sarcasm).

They do not cross road, but they do cross railroad tracks.

Spring fed stream. Has four species of crayfish, one still needs to be described. Also has Pirate Perch, one of my favorite critters.

Seriously, don't you wish you could let your birds run like that? He has lots of wild Turkey roaming like I have seen no where else even when I live in Missouri. What he does not do is raise chicks free-range as the place crawls with Coopers Hawks. Instead of Great-horned Owls he has Barred Owls causing troubles but only where he rears young birds. He is likely to get an English Shepherd that will be protecting at least one of the poultry areas, possibly two if it operates like dogs we had as kids.

Yes, it would be cool.
How many birds does he lose?
How long has he been doing this?
