In the Brooder
Hello all! I'm starting up a thread introducing my flock and recording some of their going-ons.
My coop:
They're currently in a pretty small coop (about 4'x3'x3'), but it's fairly insulated against wind and rain, has a nice perch, and has ample bedding for cushioning.
This last Saturday (1/3) I confirmed my first egg from one of the 'Nuts (they can be hard to tell apart some times)! Haven't confirmed anyone else has started laying yet- I've been off for two weeks, which means they've had all-day access to free range. I wouldn't be surprised if someone already started and was leaving a stash somewhere...
But I'm hoping to start seeing some regular egg production soon! Oyster shell has been mixed into their food to help them now.
At some point I'd love to add a pair of Amerecaunas to the flock- a black and a lavender, preferably (I LOVE lavender chickens), but coop upgrades come first!
My coop:
- "Sammy" Samsquatch (hen, Buff Brahma, the big bad leader)
- Silva (hen, Opal Legbar, second-in-command, always squaring up with Sammy)
- Ruffnut and Tuffnut (hens, Silver-laced Chocolate Orpingtons, the twins)

- I added a nest-box area and gave it proper flooring to raise it off the ground over the holidays.
- I'll be looking into adding a run to it so they can have more space to move around here soon.
- I've also gotta fix up one side so I can completely open the coop for cleaning.
- At some point I may raise a side of the roof, too. It's currently flat, so it holds some water, and the setup has their heads right at roof level when standing on their perch. Would also give me space to add a bit of a vent on one side (while there's already some space in the build that lets the coop breathe, this would be an actual dedicated space for that).
- It's doesn't have too much "real" siding on it yet. I've gotta get some more wood for proper siding.
- Their water capacity has been updated this weekend, their food capacity will be updated in another week or two.
