So i saw a llama today on CL for only $100. It says hes gentle, halter trained and follows you around like a puppy. He is 7 years old (how old do they live?). What do I need to know before i persue this animal? I'm currently trying to convince my husband to get one... lol

My parents have had several llamas over the years. The main thing you need to know is that they need to be sheared during the hot months (she gets hers done in early May). Keeps them cooler. They free range on her acreage, but she does supplement their feed in winter and lean grass months. I'm sure there are many who are more knowledgeable about them, but don't ever mix two males - they'll kill each other. We had one that knocked a fence down and killed the older male - it was awful! If this one is on a halter, sounds like it would be a nice addition to your family. Just don't make them mad - they will spit on you and it is an extremely smelly proposition!

first of all, the fleece actually acts as insulation during the heat. you can shear at any time, but yes, you need to shear once a year.

castrated males will run quite happily with each other. entire males can be a little more agressive, some will cohabitat, others wont

make sure he is healthy, and make sure he has company (any sheep, goat or other camelid)

7 is early middle age for a camelid
