I have a dilemma! So I have two spots picked out for the coop I know they should be on high ground but I have none. So option one would be right beside my 16 x 16 dog kennel which houses 2 large breed 5 yr old dogs during the days and when gone for holidays. My dogs should not be a threat to my chicks as they were raised with them as pups, and do not bother my guinea foul any way. The benifit there being a predator deterrent. But has it down side. It will take more work to run electric out to the coop and will be at the bottom of a hillside. The other option is to build the run and coop futher down on my property next to the outdoor equiptment shed which is also at the bottom of a hillside, but I recently had the hillside dozed with a ditch cut around the shed part to cut the water away. Running electric would be no problem there. Downside there I will worry my self sick if I have to leave over night, because the dogs will be 200 foot away and not able to keep my chickens safe. I plan to roof the whole thing run with hardwire coop with tin and run 14 guage electric fencing around the run and coop. If you were in my shoes what would you do? And do I need to trim the tree way back to stop anything from gaining acess to the top of the run looking for weak spots?
