Locations where you can get Purina Duck Feed

BTW if you have your eggs gathered up I am in central NC but watch out for the guard geese, they don't like strangers!

This is not my first go around with feed sources. Southern States makes a wonderfull waterfowl floating pellet in their Richmond VA plant. It used to reek of fish oil that was applied to the outside of the pellet to waterproof it. The only draw back in my eyes was that it was 20% protein which is a little rich for periods of fast growth and wing development. I would recommend it only to get told it wasn't available in the area. A friend just over the SC line couldn't get it but he could get a wonderfull feed that was made for the Mallard hunting clubs in his area We used to meet and exchange pickup loads of feed a couple of times per year.
The SS waterfowl pellets used to be available as far north as "the Southern Tier" of NY but SS bought out a bunch of AG-Way stores and the supply wouldn't strech that far north anymore. If anyone here has Southern States feed stores it doesn't hurt to ask. It is a great feed and tons of fun to throw a cup of the pellets on the water surface when the ducks are around, the movement in the water just drives them nuts and they go into a feeding frenzy. I suppose I should at least try to sleep.....

As far as that goes, I consider fresh, home-grown, free-range/pastured eggs the epitome of healthy foods.

Oh gosh don't get me started on the "evils of animal by-products!" Since the mad cow scare/propaganda campaign/fiasco they've removed meat and meat by-products totally from most commercial feeds.
Wonder how much that cost the soy industry?
People...chickens and waterfowl are not going to die if they eat animal by-products.
Ducks and chickens are not herbivores!
They need and eat meat and fish.
Please somebody make some poultry feed
without SOY!
Also note that the "grain by products" which make up the Sunfresh line can be anything they happen to have access to at the time. Ground up corn stalks, wheat hulls or whatever. And whats so "natural" about the GMO/Round-Up Ready crops they most likely use for these major commerical feeds? Probably the only thing natural about the SunFresh Recipes is the word "natural" printed on the bag.

Now GD... do you really think I would waste my good eggs on your house?

Yes, the Sunfresh recipe contains no animal fats or proteins while the Duck Chow clearly contains animal products - I'm a vegetarian, but I feed my ducks the Purina Duck Grower (mixed with Layena) despite it's animal proteins and I eat their eggs.

I know that the Layena is supposed to be an okay complete ration for chickens, turkey, ducks, and geese, but they're all so different from one another that I don't feel like I'm feeding my ducks properly unless I give them the feed that's formulated specifically for them as well.

Plus, my ducks LOVE the Duck Grower, and they'll always pick all the pellets out of their dish right when I feed them, and then pick at the leftover Layena at the bottom of the dish throughout the day.

I never said they would be harmed by eating animal by-products, I said that some people (including some of my customers) don't want it. Of course ducks aren't herbivores; mine eat a ton of worms, froglets, tadpoles, and insects... but I've never seen them bring down a cow! Probably they could manage a suckling pig if they all ganged up...

The Purina duck feed is available here in Illinois...but they tell me they can't get the breeder formula, just the Starter and Grower.

The Purina Duck Grower is avaiable here on Long Island as well. Pet Supplies Plus on Main Street in Smithtown... hope that helps someone

I'll talk to my feed store here in S. Oregon and see what they turn up. I am agonizing over feed currently. I have been using an Organic poultry feed, and supplement the ducks with Brewer's Yeast, but it is expensive and I really don't think it has everything they need. It is soy based for the protien, and it has occured to me that they may not be processing it. My chickens are showing signs of not getting enough protein, and I have put my teenagers back on starter and supplement cat food. It's like they can't get enough. And it makes me wonder if the ducks are in the same boat. In my situation, it makes me wonder if I'm not doing more harm than good to my flocks by trying to support the Organic feed movement. I think I will see what I come up with in terms of having it custom mixed. But I can't go a cent over what I'm currently paying. And not only that, in terms of marketability, doesn't really matter if I feed them Organic food if the basis for their protien intake becomes cat food that's not labeled Organic.....I think I'll end up switching. I'm just frustrated by the whole thing.
I don't think meat by-products are all that bad. It's just all the extra stuff all mashed. Stuff we humans would have gobbled down not so many generations ago. I am currently wishing my Organic feed had some.

Goosedragon~ Wish I could get some of that S. States feed here, sounds fantastic!

So do I since I started this post quite a while ago my local Southern States dealer (indepentent owner) went out of business due to the local poultry processing plant closing. You stop buying food and dump chickens when that happenns.
