I just put the eggs on lockdown!! I'm so excited! Does anyone know when they might start pipping and/or rocking? I've been trying to catch them rocking but I've had no luck. Also, I noticed a spider in the incubator! Is it ok if I leave the little guy in there?

I put my pekin eggs on lockdown at noon on Sunday and they were internally pipped the next night. I could see them wiggling off and on the whole time. They all pipped the shells last night.

As far as the spider....bleh! That would be a sure way to keep me from opening up the incubator during lockdown lol.
I wouldn't think it would hurt the eggs - perhaps a concern once they hatch, some spider bites can be nasty.

Good luck!!!

So I've done 3 hatches and so far I've never seen any rocking or movement. I watch like a friggen hawk and I always seem to miss it. My earliest pip was on day 19 and hatched out on day 20. It's like that whole a watched pot never boils thing. But once they start pipping it's like popcorn. One after the other! Good luck and try not to worry too much :)

x2. I seldom ever see rocking and my nose is glued to the bator, I've had them pip and hatch as early as day 19. My first hatch was awful and only had one survivor hatch day 24

I really hope this goes well. It seems like everyone has not so good first hatch experience. Maybe if I keep my hopes up it'll go as great as I imagine it in my head. Is there anything I should know prior to hatching?

Also I just finished building and painting this coop for my silkies! Yay!

My first hatch I had 100% hatch rate. No Joke I got 12 eggs form @Bama1 and all 12 hatched. So you can do it you just have to believe. But really it's going to go great. But as for anything you should know. Be aware of what unabsorbed yolk sacs look like, splay leg, and what to do to fix these common ailments would be my only recommendation. Make sure to have the brooder ready before hatching begins.

Most important thing you can do is check and calibrate your thermometer and hygrometer. (Including any gages on the incubators.) Do NOT follow the instructions in any incubator manuals for hatching, especially where humidity is concerned. If you are using a styro bator consider doing a dry hatch. Understand humidity before you start. Know the diffference between still/forced air and what the temps should be for the one you are using, (manuals often have this wrong as well.)
