My redstar hen "Miss Kitty" named after the gunsmoke character by my dad has a habit of escaping by flying over the fence. I've meant to clip her wings but, never get to it because I've been working on a new coop for them. I usually give her a few treats and coax her back into the fenced in garden.

Today though I let her free range nearly all day as a treat because the wonderful job she does of giving us eggs. A large black dog ran by and grabbed her while I wasn't looking and took off running across the field. I was chasing after it knowing she was about to die. The next thing I know the dog started yelping and dropped her. When the dog looked back I noticed that an eye was missing and had blood running down it's face. She had gobbled part of his eye while he was trying to make off with a free meal.

Her damage was only a few bent feathers but, that's all. Her reward was an apparently tasty eye. I'll have to be careful from now on about holding her close when I pick her up.

bet ya that dog wont touch another chicken...

That has to be one all time smartest chicken! Good Job Miss Kitty!!! And I am a dog lover but I hate to see a dog go nuts and attack animals senselessly. And about the dog owner suing, I will bet the dog never utters a peep about who where when or why his eyeball got pecked! Excellent story, it sure makes up for most of the sad ones where chickens are always getting killed on here. I bet you could make good money renting that chicken out to frustrated dog owners who can not keep the dogs from killing chickens!

Matter of fact, I think you should breed that chicken often and sell her eggs or chicks all over the country! They would have to come out with some very smart, life saving dna.

I'm not worried about the owner suing. It is illegal to have a "dog at large" in the area. If it is destroying things on my property it is legal at least here shoot it. It was lucky it only lost an eye. I'm not sure whom the dog belongs to as I've never seen it before.

She is a tough old bird and she'll peck your legs if you don't bring her a treat in the morning. She is the alpha hen and flogs some of the roos in her run. She loves the Buff Orp roo only (Marshall Dillon) hehe.

It was gross though and I'll have to watch that beak from now on when I'm holding her.
