Lola's outside and walking normally! YAY!!!!

I'm trying to stop crying but I can't. I saw Lola walk and she's no better than yesterday. Put her back inside in the dog crate. Got an appt. with the avian vet this afternoon. They are going to work with me on the $$ since I don't get paid till next week and my husband will not put a penny toward a vet for her. I just hope it's something she can recover from. She was vaccinated for Merrick but I know that's not 100% and it looks neurological a bit to me the way she walks. Don't know, I'm scared to death and just beyond upset. It's gonna be a long day.

I'm sorry to hear that. You did say on an earlier post that she ate this morning, perhaps she needs to get her energy up while she's in this bad molt. A bad molt can take a whole lot out of a bird.

Ok, back from the vet. He thought she was egg bound but after $120 Xray...no egg. Def. neurological, her toes curl up and she doesn't straightend them out right away. He gave her a shot of B12 and sent me home with antibiotics. Told me to keep her on a heating pad around the clock on low and he will call me in the am. So, $232.00 later, I still don't know what's wrong. He said she could have eaten rat/mice poo and pick up something...or it could be Merek and if so she will go downhill fast and die and there isnt anything that can be done.

Has she been drinking? I had a hen acting like she had a stroke for about 3 days, weak, couldn't even hold up her head. I don't know what was wrong. The vet I call told me to give her pedi lite or corn syrup and water with vitamins using a syringe to keep her from getting dehydrated. I think it kept her alive long enough that her body healed.

It's so tough when you don't know what to do, I hope Lola recovers.

This reminds me of worms, they'll make the chicken stop eating and look lethargic. This could also be coccidiosis, that hurts the chickens tummy, so they don't want to eat. Check her feces if there's blood in them she has coccidiosis and worms would have little worms in them. Before I go into detail i just want to make sure it's none of those. Sorry about your chickens illness

Offer her liquid vitamins diluted in water, by dropper. Just let a drop of vitamin water touch the side of her beak and she will take it in. It could be as simple as a vitamin deficiency. I had a youngster on death's door and the vitamins brought her back in less than 24 hrs.

Thanks Tap, yeah when something happens and you don't know what is going on or what to do it is frightning...at least for me, but I am kinda wimpy when it comes to sick animals...I cannot, CANNOT handle seeing any animal suffer or be sick. I watched that move Black Beauty for the first time a couple of years ago....I was crying so bad I seriously could not stop and I know it was just a movie but I couldn't take it. I still bawl when I watch the Lion King for pete's sake!

Anyway, it sure is a blessing to be able to come on this board with so many experienced folks who are kind enough to pass along what they have learned. Thank you all who have responded and talked to me on PM, you are all just wonderful people!

I hope my baby girl pulls through this. Come on Lola, you can do it girl! We are all rooting for ya!

Keep doing what're doing and feed her scramble eggs mixed with buttermilk. This will help her a bit with the anti-biotics. Buttermilk has pro-biotics in it. Keep her warm and give her tons of love. Make sure you give her water too. When you use a syringe make sure you don't give it to her too fast or it may go down the wrong pipe there in her throat.

Praying Lola gets better.
