Lola's outside and walking normally! YAY!!!!

Make sure Lola is protected from predators because shes a target, molting chickens are the slowest. I lost my Australorp hen while she was molting to a bobcat. I caught the bobcat red handed, and when I felt the Australorp "Honk" i felt her heart beat at least one last time I thought, she was still very warm. Darn my timing. So keep a eye out for predators.

Oh definitley! She's been upstairs in my spare bathroom since last week. I only brought her out today to see how she's walking...can't get her to walk for me inside. She was so happy to see her girls...except Thelma who of course had to assert herself...but Lola stood her ground and Thelma backed off. I put her in the totally enclosed run today thinking, it's actually up to 50 degrees and sun...then I talked to the vet who said put her back in the house and keep her there till she is better. If she has Mereks or something catchy we want to keep it contained. So, that's what I'm doing. That and holding my breath....

How did you get the bird back from the bobcat? You are one brave chickipoo!

Yes the cold weather doesn't help molting! High protein helps the feathers grow in! (eggs, a little cat food)

Well actually the bobcat couldn't pick up the hen because she was to heavy for the scrawny thing. This was really scary for me because this bobcat was desperate. It killed Honk behind a Tuff Shed (we have 2 next to each other) and the bobcat ran around the second one, and I spotted the 2 other cornered hens 5 feet away from the incident. I looked to the front of the Tuff Shed and there it was with its grumpy face and its tail flicking at me. So naturally after something kills one of your fav's you want to scream, so that's just what I did; chased down the path and it jumped over the 6 foot wire fence and through in between a set of barbed wire. Of course my mom wasn't here, my dad was inside downstairs, and my sister wasn't here.... did i mention I was in the chicken yard with just socks on?

So I herded up the others into their pen. And I was shaking for a long time, after bagging up Honk.

Chick named Lola -

I have just read through the thread and I have to say you are one very loving Mom!

I hope Lola keeps improving for you - with your care she should be fine!

I have a chicken "Mattie" who has been ill for over 2 months now - she started to stumble around and I soon realised she had lost her eyesight - she is so much better now, a programme of antibiotics, lots of massage and even "walking her" supporting her legs and trying to get her moving naturally... she is so much better now - she supports herself without the need for dropping her wing(s) to steadt her - I guess what I am trying to say is don't ever give up on her unless she gives up on you... you and she will hopefully have some great times ahead of you to treasure - she is one very lucky chicken to have you !!!!

All best wishes

Awwww, that is so very sweet of you to say, thank you! I really do feel bad for my critters...we weren't blessed with children so I think I take all my pent up mothering out on them. They oblige me by putting up with it.

Oh, I and I have to say...I saw Lola balancing on one foot today while she was scratching her face with the other...that was so nice to see. The other day she was leaning on stuff to like hold herself up. I'll take any bit of improvement I see.

i had a chicken who was bit on her leg in 2010. she wasn't getting better for awhile but then, all at once she just started feeling better and walking around. she still walks around flipping her foot around to walk. so if her foot problem doesn't get better then she can still live with it and be happy. i hope Lola recovers all the way though!

I'm glad to heat that she is showing signs of improvement!
When my girl was sick I didn't give her any medications after being convinced that it was just a protein deficiency. I did however give her electrolytes in the water and lots of love :)
best wishes

Chick Named Lola

I am in the same situation as you - no children but my animals are my babies and I love them as any Mother would do - as you do also!

Keep your spirits up - with the help of a great Mom as you are, I have no doubt she is happy and she knows that you are doing everything for her that any Mom would do for her babies

Best wishes for you and yours!

I have my favorite hen (don't tell the others...) but she's wise and old I have to say but one time her leg had a issue, her leg band wasn't stuck up there near her thigh at all, so we put her in a crate in my room for a couple weeks and she got better (we gave her Poly-vi-sol too) We have no clue what her problem was...

Give Lola some chicken soup-- oh wait never mind... forget I said that.

I hope Lola will feel better soon

Thank you all for your support and kind words. Lola is still holding her own, no worse, no better. sigh But I'm not giving up on her, no way. She's so normal besides the walking thing. But I see her balance herself on one leg or the other to scratch her face etc.. That's good but why can't she walk right? Vet found no problem with her legs. I forget who posted a while back they had chicken in the same situation and after time she came around. That made me very hopeful. I have a feeling she is just going through a reeeeeeally bad molt. So, in the meantime, I will just continue to support her in her hospital bathroom upstairs. Keep her warm, feed her anything she wants and love her to pieces. What else can I do? I'll have to get a pic, her feathers are coming in a bit just S L O W L E Y.....sigh.
