My small flock of two has now dwindled to only one after the sudden death of my barred rock. I feel I should get a companion for my lone hen. Is it easy to integrate a new adult hen? Since they are flock birds I know she would be happier with a buddy.

Well, at first they may quarrel a bit because the will establish a pecking order. That's just the way of chickens. With only two, it shouldln't be so bad.....Don't be too upset when you see some pecking and squabbling....it's just natural.

I think it's a good idea! They should eventually like eachother. Put a nice treat, like a cabbage or a nice apple cut in half in their coop to give them something to do at first.......

Good luck to you,

It's not to hard

After quarenteen what we do is place the new chick/en in a small coop then place that coop in the current coop. We leave her/them there for about a week or so. Then we let out the new flock member at ranging time about 15 minutes early, then we let out the old flock member. Usually over food is a good thing. Or you can slip em in while your other chicken is sleeping, but I haven't actually tried that one.

Hope it helps and good luck on a new girl!!!!
