Lone Turkey Poult (Pic)

Wife's Chicken Killer :

I'm struggling now with a poult problem now and was/am reading your post for information/encouragment... Where are you on this now... How is the lone little poult?

The problem I'm dealing with is my poults can't seem to consistantly find the food. And when they do one of them always pecks at their beaks and tries to steal the food rather than get his own...

I haven't a clue, but I'm going to try the aluminum foil idea you had... Wish me luck and give us an update...

I hope all is well with you and your's.

Well thanks for asking. All is VERY well over on this end. I was lucky enough that 5 more poults have hatched since then. Another had hatched a few days after the lone poult hatched and yet another a few days later, so that was exciting and a relief. In my last post, I talked about her pecking at the rug. Well, I put some feed on the rug and she learned to eat by pecking the feed on the rug. When she was in her cardboard brooder box, I sprinkled gamebird starter on the puppy pads and towel and she pecked and pecked and pecked. So she learned how to eat without another poult or a baby chick. She learned how to drink when I put marbles in the water. So within 48 hours, she was eating and drinking on her own with no problems. The aluminum foil and marbles worked like a charm. I guess the reflection from the aluminum foil got her attention and she continued to peck at it.

Where do you have your poults? How big are small is the brooder box? When were they born? Where is their food? Is it in a feeder?

Good luck on getting them to consistently eat. Keep us posted on what's going on.

Here is a pic of the first few poults about a month ago. Since then, they have all graduated to the outside brooder and the 2 males are strutting and the female is just looking at them. I will try to take pics tomorrow and post for everyone to see.

WONDERFUL !!!!!!!! I'm so happy that it seems to be working. WHEW!!! I was getting worried after reading your post. This is great news!!! Thanks for letting us know.

i wonder if you just take one baby chick and put the poult and chick together if they might end up being buddies, rather than put the poult in with a bunch of the chicks and they team up on her. maybe being the only chick it would make friendly with the poult. just a thought!

I got the poults at a local poultry swap this past saturday... They are bourbon reds and were hatched by a reputable person...

The brooder is a 3 ft plastic swimming pool with pine shavings topped with paper towels til they figure out the feed situation.

Heat lamp on them about 2-3 ft above shavings with areas of pool not lit for them to escape heat if needed.

I did have just the red chick feeder in there with them, but quickly noticed they were only getting lucky when they pecked at it...

Most of the time only one or two were really eating with the other two just pecking at their beaks.

I tried several different ideas: shiny plate- too slick for them to stand on. Egg yolk mixed in - they HATED that!!! Wouldn't get near it... Food just on towel - hit or miss... Finally the aluminum foil (shiny side up) seemed to do it.

This morning the feed in the foil was all tracked in and there was feed all around it... There seemed to be less feed, but couldn't be sure. I'll camp out this pm when I get home, watch, and update you after...

Pics and updates by 5pm, promise!!!

Prayers for my poults and my nerves, PLEASE!!!

Sounds like you have a perfect setup! Aluminum foil shiny side up is exactly what I do. If there is less feed, then they are most likely eating it.

I am confident in you that your poults will do just fine. You're on the right path.

I forgot to ask. How many poults do you have? The reason that I asked how many and what type of brooder is because (in my opinion and I am NOT a turkey expert), I would keep them in a smaller brooder so that they don't have so far to wander off AWAY from the feed and water. I put my lone poult in a show box. This kept him near the feed and water so he was able to learn in a small area. When he "learned" to eat, I moved him to a larger cardboard box. With too many, you don't want too small of a brooder because you don't want them to get bored and being pecking on one another, so it's a hit and miss with sizes. I just like to experiment and read and research and I do my own little "lab experiments" and I have been lucky enough that most everything works with me with a little tweaking and additional info from more experienced BYC people on the turkey forum.

Ok, I think that's all I wanted to mention to you.

I would say that you have done an excellent job with the set up. I like that the feed is scattered all over for them. Everything is right there for them. Oh, they will be fine. You have nothing to worry about.
