Lonely chick

I only hatched one chick from a batch of shipped eggs. Would it be better to purchase 2 chicks or try to give the lone chick to a broody hen who has only been broody a week? This is genetically a very valuable chick.

Hmmm...personally I would get a couple of chicks for company - unless you are completely sure the broody won't attack or abandon the chick.
Since your chick is valuable, you would have to be sure of your hen.

This is a mottled java chick. Mottled java are a heritage breed that many of our modern breeds in the USA were developed from. We are trying to develop a program in Indiana to keep the breed alive.

This is a mottled java chick. Mottled java are a heritage breed that many of our modern breeds in the USA were developed from. We are trying to develop a program in Indiana to keep the breed alive.

This is the only chick we have successfully hatched from the Bowen line.

Only a week of broodiness makes the broody hen somewhat questionable. Since this is an 'important' chick, I would buy a couple more chicks for companionship.
