Hi all,
We adopted a pea hen a few months back. She is usually pretty quiet, but started making the most unusual sound! It's like a goose honk with a hiccup at the end! She wandered around the acre a while making that sound, then made a nest and laid 4 eggs. I let her set 1 of the 4, and after 30 days she refused two Wellsummer pullets I slipped under her at night to raise. I removed the egg to get her off the nest. She has since been mostly quiet but for a few "tooks" here and there, and she allowed my banty rooster to {attempt} to mate her! Today, she was standing in the pasture and I swore there was a male in the yard - it was her, making the meooooowwww sound of a male!
What is the ratio of males to females and will she fly away searching for one? Did she really make that meeeooowwww or is there a male hiding in one of my trees? She seems to like the chickens but of course not ducks, and more the males than the hens. Thanks!
