Lonely Hen needs a new flock. Please Help!

Thank you so much! You sound like such a lovely chicken Mama!
Seeing her alone yesterday was tough. But, probably harder on me than her. I couldn’t bare the thought of her dustbathing and freeranging alone and not having her friend. Today, was a better day. She spent the morning inside with me and my pups, we weeded and of course she helped with the bugs, now she’s laying under the banana tree. She will continue to sleep inside in their “hospital” crate at night. She’s been sleeping there for a couple months with Rizzo, bc I didn’t want them seperated. She does ok inside, but def gets over it and loudly announces she wants to go back out. I will just let her do her thing and we will adjust to this new life together. It’s hurt more to think of rehoming her, than picturing her without her friend. So I think it’s best for her to stay with me. She is so loved and gets along with both my dogs and cats. She will be ok and I will continue to spoil and love on her. I have looked into chicken diapers and plan to purchase a few. I am a huge neat freak, so that’s been a concern. If I can get these diapers to work, it will be life changing! Thank you ladies for your time, help, and advice! It’s so refreshing meeting fellow chicken mommas who are as obsessed with their girls as me! Wish you the best with your girl as well!

Ps. WOW!!! 8 yrs old! That’s amazing!

Well, the reason I have a single hen is because the flock kicked her out. They nearly killed her so now she lives in my house and is a perfectly content spoiled queen. I’m sure people think I’m weird and i dont know your situation, but that arrangement has worked for her and me and then you could keep her! Best of luck!

You’re def not weird! You’re awesome! Thank you for being such a good chicken mama! She sounds so loved!
I am purchasing some chicken diapers and giving it a shot! My animals are my family, and I could never part with any of them. Honestly, it’s hurt so much just thinking of rehoming her. I’d always be worried about her and of course I feel nobody can love her as much as me. We are going to give it a go and hopefully she does ok. Thank you again. Really means a lot.

Just you mentioned to me, you need to become her flock. I used to keep Lovebirds and hence the name"Lovebird", they HAVE to have a mate or they pine away and die. And I would become their mate when they lost theirs. You will never be able to fill that space that another chicken would, but you can surely still make her life enjoyable. After a couple of weeks, and yes keep a very strict routine with her so she feels very secure, she will get used to when you spend time with her, when treat time is, free range time, etc... I don't think my girl gets lonely. Bored, yes, not lonely. I try and spend a great deal of time with her. If you have the time to give to her, she will probably do just fine being an only chicken. Rehoming, especially 1 chicken, is very stressful on them.

Here she is (Hilda) with her mirror, roost buddy and pillow. :gig I whipped up that stuffed chicken on the day her sister passed on, I figured Hilda needed a sleeping pal. :) (Hilda was molting at the time so she looks a bit rough)
Oh my goodness! That stuffed chicken is so sweet A great idea! Such a lovely little setup!
I feel so much better going into this! I didn’t know chickens could do so well without a chicken friend. Thank you for sharing! I’m willing to give it a chance and as long as she is happy, we will make it work. I appreciate everyone’s help and advice!

Definitely give it a try. She may be just fine. If she starts to get disturbed, you can look into rehoming. Good luck with her, oh and keep us posted!!! :)

That’s awesome! My girl is also 8 and she rules the house. She gets very excited when I come home and makes happy clucks. She’ll sit on the couch and we’ll just hang out. It’s definitely possible to have a house bird. I hope yours adjusts well but I’m thinking it won’t be much of a problem at all! Speckles has a play pen set up for the day and then she can free roam when I’m home. It’s those foam puzzle piece mats with newspaper on top and fenced in with a portable dog fence. If you have any questions or anything, always feel free to message me!
