We have 6 runner ducks in a half acre paddock with a large pond and 3 hens. The ducks are either 3 or 2 years old - we started with 2 male 2 female, they had ducklings, some got munched by badgers and we now have 3 males and 3 females. Lately (since mating season has started) one of the males has started exhibiting odd behaviour. He hangs out by himself mostly, usually under a tall bush. I haven't noticed any pecking or aggressive behaviour from the other ducks, he joins them roaming around the field or pond at times, he doesn't seem to be ill, lame or not eating at all. Yesterday I noticed that he stood up straight and seemed to be quacking silently - that is. his beak was opening and shutting but no sound was coming out at all. This is accompanied by a heaving chest but at other times he acts normally, either by himself or within the group.

I feel quite sorry for my mostly lonely duck. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong with him?

Thanks

Ducks will hide illness. The best help is a good duck vet. It is possible he may have worms or other health problem. Getting a closer look would be good. He may also have a throat injury, and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in the drinking water would not hurt (as long as the water pot is not galvanized metal).
