And then think about running the water through peat to naturally soften it. Bettas like the tannins released by the peat as well, and it inhibits algae growth. I have some of this coming in my current order... http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=21338

And the Almond leaves lower the ph as well...

Would using an occasional almond leave be sufficiant enough soften the water, and lower the PH? and make the fishie happy?

Keeping an almond leaf per gallon should lower the PH to begin with.. and then add new leaves when you do water changes. You're the one that posted the aricle on Almond leaves

But you should test the water at least the first ime you do it so you know what works for your particular water... I have one of these coming too!
