Hi Lisa202, bantams are cute! does your roo make alot of noise? i so wish we could keep a roo. i guess i'll have to wait until i move out into the country someday!

I love chickens too!

Hi I'm not from RI but I just wanted to tell you RI's bad I don't know where I saw it but I think it was on backyard chickens anyways there are rooster collars and they don't hurt the roosters but they prevent them from expanding their throats to make the rooster call. You should check into it it might be good for you who can't have roosters. I too am not allowed to have roosters though I live in the desert. My landlord doesn't like the idea of roos even though everybody around me has them, LOL my roosters aren't quite old enough to start making their calls. I hadn't planned on roos when I bought my 4 baby chicks. I am pretty sure that at least three are roos. LOL

I am new to backyard chickens. I inherited five lovely hens from seller of my house two weeks ago. Unfortunately my Aussie has developed a strong prey drive directed at them. I can't keep them they are too upset. I'm keeping them apart for one but it's difficult. Can anyone please take them? One is five the rest are younger. Please help!

Just wanted to say hello to my fellow Long Island chicken lovers. We just got into the chicken thing about a year ago with adult chickens. We are getting ready to order our first batch of chicks.

Hello,
welcome-byc.gif
Where abouts on the island are you?

WOW! Do you have a farm? We only have 4 now. We got 7 from a friend who didn't want them anymore when they were about 1-2 years old. We are down to 4. They have slowed down / stopped laying during the summer so I think they are at the end of their laying time. We are getting ready to build a much better coop / pen area and we are going to get some chicks in a few weeks.

No, I wish I did though. I live on an acre. I sell the eggs out east and honestly couldn't keep up with demand for the eggs. They shouldn't stop laying at 2 years old. They do slow down eventually but at 2 they should still be laying well. I have one hen who is 8 years old that hatches chicks for me every spring and she still lays a few eggs over summer. Do you know what breed of chicken you have? Where are you getting your chicks from? What type?
