long red stringy thing coming from bottom of chicken

Hi,

I have just noticed that one of my two chickens has a red stringy thing coming from her bottom! I tried to remove it gently but it would not come away. I am very worried about it and her sister will not let her sit in the coop on her own, she keeps trying to attack her and possibly eat what ever it is that is coming from her behind, so I have had to separate them.

I am very worried about her! Any clues to what it could be and should I be worried????

Welcome to BYC forum. I see that this is your first post.

I think that the site require a certain number of posts before you can add a picture, BUT - I think maybe if you "build a page" -- you could put a photo of this condition on your page. You can always edit your 'page' later and remove that photo.

You may want to try a warm bath for your chicken - and it may relax her enough to expel the stringy thing---but not knowing anything about it -- that is just a wild guess.

This reply should bump you up - Hopefully someone can give good advice - but the more they have to go on the better advice they can give!

thank you for your reply. Iv got her inside now and the other one is in the roost. Im going to take her to the vet, iv decided, just to be on the safe side. They make me worry so much, and cherry is the worst, she always seems to have something going on with her

I wonder if it is something im either doing or not doing! They have got new food, which was in the same packaging as their usual stuff but im guessing the manufacturers have changed it, so it is possibly this that is upsetting their insides! Plus i have now just noticed that they have mites! again! Iv had them for 4 years and this is the second time this year that they have had them now! They never had them in the years before! Again im worried about what im either doing or not doing!

Sorry for the rant! they just make me worried!

Well if you have had them for four years...there are a LOT of things that you must be doing right!!!

Just like you -- I worry about my chickens and hover over them like a 'mother hen'. Good luck with it. Are you in UK? I know that vets there are more used to seeing and treating backyard chickens. I sure hope that it gets cleared up quickly.
