Stringy/squiggly thing coming from vent along with discharge

Amoxicillin dose I use is 57 mg per pound of body weight, twice a day.
Some sources say 125 - 250 mg for a 5 lb bird, twice a day, for 5 - 7 days.
I usually do it by weight, and I have given higher doses on occasion with no ill effects.

I started her on the augmentin 1/4 pill twice a day. I am really struggling to give it to her. We rarely handle our hens so they’re very skittish and stressed when we do.

I hid it in a greenies pill pocket (for cats), she loved it but was able to just peck the pocket away and leave the pill. I crushed it into cat food and she loved it the first time but now seems to notice the taste of the augmentin and avoid anything I hide it in, including the cat food. I tried to tube feed her with a solution I made, but she struggled so much I feared I would get some into her windpipe and gave up.

I have been letting her forage with the other hens, but I’m thinking my only option is to isolate her and withhold normal feed until she’s finished something with her meds in it…

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

She does seem to be doing well. She’s active and foraging, and her poops look fairly normal, though they look more narrow (see picture), not sure if that means anything. She’s been bathing and keeping her vent clean, I’ve not seen anything else stuck but she did seem to maybe be working on pushing a few times over the last few days, though I never saw anything come out and she hasn’t laid. Normally she lays almost every day.

Glad she's doing better. For the pill, I would either just put the pill portion in her beak, push it back, and she will swallow it. Easy and done. Just hold her or wrap her in a towel like a burrito with her head out, pull down on her wattles to open the beak, give the pill. Alternately, when I have to give a small portion of a pill or capsule, I will mix it in a small amount of soft coconut oil (not melted) and freeze it til firm, and then give it the same way, like a custom pill. They usually like coconut oil. Much easier, over quickly, and no issues with not wanting to eat whatever it's in.

Glad to hear she's hanging in there.

I agree, I just give a pill directly into the beak. They become wise if you try to hide in food.

She hasn’t laid, but she seems to be molting, so I’m hoping that’s why. Poor thing has so many feathers missing and it’s been really cold here near Chicago. But she seems to be managing just fine. Thanks again!

Poor dear is molting now isn't she, seems to be when it's cold they lose the feathers.

Hello! Noticed today that my 1.5 year old (what I believe to be) Rhode Island Red was lethargic today. When I took a closer look saw what looked like clear mucus was dangling from her vent area. At bed time I took a closer look, it was yellowish mucus and a stringy thing (pictured). What is it? I thought about pulling on it, but not sure if I should.

I gave her an epsom bath, trimmed the surrounding feathers, and gently massaged around the vent to try to help with movement. I couldn't feel any eggs, but I've never felt for them so don't really know what I'm doing. Her vent was moving the whole time, as though she were trying to get something out. She normally lays frequently, almost every day, but hasn't laid for maybe 3-4 days. I thought it was possibly due to molting. I can't tell from looking at her, but have seen more of her feathers than usual in the coop. Now I'm wondering if the break in laying is just due to what seems to be vent gleet.

Now she's in the house in a kennel with water with electrolytes and probiotics and a little sugar. I'm guessing no food yet since it seems that she's blocked up.

Not sure if this is relevant but for the last month or so, most of her eggs have had corrugated tips, just the very tip, as pictured. Also, she was attacked by a raccoon in July (4 months ago) and the skin on her abdomen and head were bitten and torn badly. I wasn't sure she'd make it, but I epsom bathed her often and sprayed with Vetericyn, and rubbed antibiotic ointment. She recovered amazingly well.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you! Worried about this girl. She's already been through a lot in her little life.
