LONG TAIL GENETICS

Thank you for your response. What you say is what I've been thinking. Nice to have my thoughts verified.

I spent most of my life in Wisconsin. I grew up in Cadott; 1/2 hour from Eau Claire and lived in Ladysmith until I retired a few years ago. While the weather is nicer here in Tennessee there's much about WI that I miss.

That’s neat! Wisconsin is beautiful, that’s for sure.

Another question-How many generations of crossing back to pure birds before the cross birds will no longer throw short tail chicks? Below is what the four generations were.

1st generation-pure Phoenix hen to pure Polish rooster
2nd generation-pure Phoenix hen to 1/2 Polish 1/2 Phoenix rooster
3rd generation-pure Phoenix hen to 3/4 Phoenix 1/4 Polish rooster
So my fourth generation chicks are 7/8 Phoenix and 1/8 Polish rooster
I plan on picking the best of the cockerels from the fourth generation chicks and pairing back to a pure Phoenix hen again. But at what point can I pair cross birds together and get 100% long tail birds?

You doing good for this weak breed ...

Your birds are beautiful. I was able to get some pure phoenix breeding pairs that produce healthy chicks. Since this Spring I have sold my phoenix cross roosters in favor of the pure stock. I have kept a pair of Yokohama; the rooster is 1/4 th serama and the hen is pure. I also kept a few phoenix cross hens, mostly to brood good eggs.
