What kind of things can go wrong???

Mold, vitamin degradation, rancidity, insect and vermin infestation to name juast a few.

but storing comparatively small quantities (i believe the OP mentioned three or four bags) in the proper container can cut down on the possibility of a lot of those issues.

i go through grain pretty quickly at my place (once a week for the horse grain, once a month for the goat grain, once every couple of months for my chicken grain at the moment), but it's all stored in a cool, dark, rodent-proof container. i inspect every lot out of the bag, top and bottom, to make sure it's good quality to begin with. i also don't put new grain on top of old grain. i've never had any type of infestation. vitamin (or other nutrient) degradation is a given with processed grains.

Most Highly processed feeds if stored improperly will loose nutrients fast. But if stored properly they will be good for a few months, 3-4.

I store all my feed in a unplugged chest freezer. It keep the rodents and the horses out. My horses will knock anything with an unsecured lid over in a heart beat. I have kept COB for the cows stored for a year in chest freezers. The last bag opened was just a good as the first.

When corn and other grains are ground, cracked, or processed they are fresh, the quality of freshness dont last over 5-6 weeks. I dont store any feed over a month.
