(1)Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I have owned chicken on and off since elementary school in many different states and climates (alaska to Texas, mountains to plains), and my grandparents ran a commercial poultry farm when I was growing up. This time around we have had chickens for 5 years and growing each year as egg customers increase.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We just increased our flock from 30 year round chickens to 60 with another 30-60 for meat.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have run a number of breeds over the year, but currently have Orpingtons, Cochins, Jersey Giants, and one Brahmas that escaped during last falls slaughter and turned up the next day. We prefer the Cochins due to their funny furry footed antics and gentle spirit, the Giants because they winter and summer well and again very gentle and the Brahmas, again do to gentle nature and handle our extreme summers and winters well. We also chose these breeds because they are good for meat and eggs and free range well (except Cochins, they don’t free range much, but do broad well and raise good healthy babies). The Orpingtons were just added last year due to the panic caused our favorites to be sold out. We probably won’t run them again. They needed extra care on the real cold days and the rooster is not friendly A factor that is important since we have a broad of kids too and they like to be able to carry them around and hang out in the coop. Again the kids favorites are the funny Cochins because they can carry them around, or they will follow them around the yard. In fact our Cochin rooster has adopted them as his flock and protects the kids from the other rooster.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Good food, funny entertainment, and ease of care.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Outdoors, family, and church

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a large family of adopted kids and animals. Plus we have adopted a few extra grandparents too. (Cats, dogs, bees, geese, turkeys, and ducks and at times goats, horses, or alpacas will turn up.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
search engine, years, had a question to answer and wasn’t finding the it answered elsewhere.
