(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Got our first chickens 5 years ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I'm not sure. Around 40 with all the new chicks, I think. My daughter takes care of them, and she knows all the exact numbers!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Asian blacks were what we started with. (It was covid, and the only think to order from tractor supply and we didn't know anything else)
4 years ago we got khaki Campbell ducks.
Then we added some silver laced wyandottes and a white leg horn (that the feed store said was a Delaware)
Last year we added some New Hampshires. And we hatched some chickens the last 2 years, so have a few mixes.
This year I bought an incubator and have really enjoyed hatching. Hatched out 1 batch of ducklings (khaki Campbells) and just hatched our second batch of chicks.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love incubating and hatching.
I love not wasting food.
Wonderful to have fresh, healthy eggs.
So much fun to watch them all!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Taking care of my family is my main hobby, and about all I have time for. But I love it, and wouldn't trade it for the world! God has blessed us richly!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 10 children, 9 of which are still in the home. My girls love the animals and my 14 year-old daughter is the main chicken keeper. She can tell every chicken apart and can usually identify whose eggs are whose as well. She's amazing with the chickens and loves doing it!
Also got Nigerian Dwarf goats and rabbits last year.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome c
ommunity?
I have been reading articles and getting advice from BYC for several years. Finally joined bc I need help with a newly hatched chick.
